Reason #2: Amazon’s Dominance

This ecommerce strategy article is an excerpt from our new book, The Ultimate Ecommerce Email & SMS Playbook. We’re diving into our ecommerce strategy chapter focused on the 7 Reasons Why Ecommerce Customers Leave Your Brand.

I’ve talked about Amazon extensively in previous chapters, but it’s highly important to highlight this: Amazon is consistently three to five years ahead of you.

The one area Amazon didn’t prepare for, like all of us, was a pandemic. Although their dominant flywheel is grabbing customers away from you left and right during this challenging time, you have a unique window where the playing field is slightly even.

In a disconnected world, customers are craving a human touch, a story, a hero, and a brand they connect with. Although Amazon checks every box on customer shopping convenience, you have an opportunity to build a relationship with customers on a deeper, self-actualization level.

But the window is closing. Amazon has deep pockets to acquire D2C brands, they are focused on creating better brand trust, and they can afford to invest billions into story-telling. If they close that gap, Amazon will absorb more of your customers post-pandemic.

The time to compete is now, while the playing field with Amazon is still somewhat level. Your brand won’t find many other opportunities. Building a connected relationship in a disconnected, faceless e-commerce world is critical now.
